About Us

Our Mission

The Welbourne Nursery and Preschool Mission Statement

To serve culturally diverse families by providing high quality education and affordable childcare in a loving, safe and nurturing environment.

Our goals at Welbourne are to:

(1) teach our children how to resolve conflict and to live peacefully together,

(2) adopt curricula that embrace the latest and best educational initiatives, and otherwise

(3) establish an education foundation that provides our children with the necessary early learning tools to become fluent readers by third grade.

Our History

Welbourne Nursery and Preschool was established in 1927 to provide affordable, quality childcare for working families living in Hannibal Square (Winter Park Westside).

For many years, we have continued to serve families and prepare their children for future academic success. While providing this invaluable service, we have served families and prepared children to remain working and self-sufficient.

Curriculum

CURRICULUM PHILOSOPHY

Welbourne follows Creative Curriculum developed by Teaching Strategies. The Creative Curriculum supports active learning that allows each child to become a creative thinker who is able to solve problems and resolve conflicts. The Creative Curriculum was founded in 1988 by a former preschool teacher, Diane Trister Dodge. It features research-based content and resources that are aligned with state early learning standards.

The Creative Curriculum for Infants, Toddlers, and Twos focuses on building responsive care through nurturing teacher-child relationships while incorporating objectives that enable teachers to focus on what matters most for young children. This curriculum focuses on five routines and eight experiences that are essential for development and learning for children birth to age three.

The Creative Curriculum for Preschool focuses on project-based investigations designed to foster social-emotional, physical, cognitive, and language development in children. It addresses all of the important areas of learning, from social-emotional and math, to technology and the arts. There are 38 different objectives for development and learning, with opportunities for teachers to individualize instruction based on each child’s specific learning needs.

The Creative Curriculum works hand in hand with the Teaching Strategies GOLD observational assessment tool. The teachers use this tool to record and track your child’s development based on appropriate developmental milestones for his/her age range. Teachers will share these observations with sponsors during the parent-teacher conferences held in October and April. For more information on the Creative Curriculum, please visit their website at https://teachingstrategies.com/curriculum/

EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

Latonya K. Pelt

Latonya K. Pelt was born in Chicago, Illinois and spent her first three years living in Hawaii. But as a military dependent, she had the awesome opportunity of traveling the world to include visiting, living in and experiencing the various customs and cultures of Japan, China as well as Korea.

Latonya received several scholarships to attend college and thus her college career began in New Orleans, Louisiana, where she was dual-enrolled at Tulane University in the AFROTC program, as well as attending Xavier University. After graduation, she was employed as an environmental chemist/project manager for several prestigious environmental companies located on both the east and west coast of the United States. After the birth of her son, Latonya volunteered at her mother-in-law’s daycare where she later realized her true love of children and thus decided to pursue a career in early childhood education and care.

As a result, Latonya has dedicated the past 12 years to working for various daycare facilities in the capacity of teacher, team lead and assistant director. Latonya current has her Director Credential, National CDA, DCF 45 hours and is certified in CPR and First Aid.
